What is malicious software or malware?
Malicious software, or malware, is used by criminals to gain access to your computer without you becoming aware. The software installs itself on your computer when you click on the attachment in a fake email, visit an untrustworthy website, or use an infected USB stick.
Characteristics of malicious software
You notice your computer is running much more slowly than normal, or a lot of unwanted pop-ups with advertising are appearing
- Don’t use this computer any more for online transactions or to log in to Creditcard Online.
- Have your computer checked by a company with expertise in removing malicious software. In the meantime, use another computer to make online transactions and to log in to Creditcard Online.
- If you have questions about fraud, or wish to make a report, you can contact the Fraud Help Desk. This organisation works in partnership with the police and the Public Prosecution Service.
Pop-ups appear on your computer asking for credit card details
- Don’t fill anything in. Contact the ABN AMRO Creditcard Services immediately.
Your computer is blocked: you receive a message demanding a payment to unblock it
- Never pay. Take your computer to a specialist in removing malicious software.
- Don’t respond to offers from people who approach you and try to sell you computer cleaning services. Always take the initiative yourself.
